Dallas Center for Photography is honored to announce its second annual collaboration with the Booker T. Washington High School of Performing and Visual Arts Dance and Media class in the 2022 Photography and Dance workshop and gallery exhibition.

In the 4-week workshop led by Executive Director Peter Poulides, students explored how to uniquely document movement with photography by using their smartphones. Prompted by weekly assignments, students created captivating images representing not what dance looks like to others but what dance feels like to them.

The Dance and Media class instructor is Ruben Gerding. The exhibition will run in the DCP community gallery until Friday, March 18. Gallery days and hours are Tuesdays from 11am-2pm, and Thursdays and Fridays Noon-7pm.

Celebrating excellence since 1976, the Booker T. Washington HSPVA Dance Department is one of the top dance programs in the country. Students train in ballet and modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, African and African Diasporic dances, and Ballet Folklórico, as well as theoretical studies in composition, dance history, kinesiology, and dance and media. The department is comprised of over two hundred dance students and fourteen dance faculty and hosts master classes and residences with renowned dance professionals in the field.

Since 1980, dance students regularly receive recognition from the National YoungArts Foundation and Young Masters Program through the Texas Commission on the Arts. They also receive scholarships to study at prominent colleges, universities, and conservatories and have gone on the have successful professional performing careers.

Through a strong curriculum in the arts and academics, master classes from the nation’s prominent artists, collaborations with the Dallas arts community, and talented and dedicated students and faculty, Booker T. Washington HSPVA Dance Department continues to be one of the best in the nation.

To serve as a focal point for creators and appreciators of all forms of photography through education, mentorship, exhibitions, and community outreach.
