Capture the colorful lights, the bustle of fair-goers and Big Tex himself at the State Fair of Texas in this special edition of our Night Photography class. Shooting after the sun goes down is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time with your camera, especially in such a vibrant atmosphere as the State Fair.

This class is unlike any of the other DCP classes and workshops. We’ll meet just outside the west entrance of the Automobile Building and start with a brief overview of techniques you can use when taking photographs at night and discuss the technical and creative process of setting up a shot. We’ll then shoot in different locations around the fair to practice those techniques. The instructor will answer any questions, help with settings and equipment issues, and offer tips on composition, perspective, exposure and lighting.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Knowledge of your camera, settings and familiarity exposure modes.
  • Our Beginner Workshop or DSLR-1 and DSLR-2 evening classes or equivalent training are a recommended prerequisite.
  • A DSLR or mirrorless camera capable of Manual exposures.
  • It’s easier to hand hold long exposures with a wide angle lens. Even a kit 18-55mm will work but if you have something wider you might bring it along.

  • Remote release is optional but nice.

  • Class ends at 8:30pm but you’re welcome to continue shooting until the fair closes.
  • Please note: tripods, selfie sticks and monopods are NOT allowed at the Fair.
  • Advance registration and payment is required.
  • Maximum number of students is 15, minimum number to make a class is 8.
  • Cost of entry and parking is not included in the workshop fee. On Wednesdays there is a discounted ticket for $4 if you bring 4 cans of food for North Texas Food Bank: http://bigtex.com/discounts/. Help us support a fellow nonprofit in Dallas.
